Car dealers in Jos, Plateau State, have tagged as harassment the on-going search for smuggled vehicles at car stands by Customs personnel, calling on the federal government to reverse its “unfriendly policy”.

The dealers told journalists that Customs officers did not give prior notice before ‘invading’ their car stands; an action they said scared away customers.

Nafiu Ya’u, the CEO of Justice Motors, said, “we are not thieves but they are planting doubt in the minds of our customers; it was this administration that stopped issuing duty at the northern boarders. What do they want us to do? Most of us do not have the financial capacity to ship in vehicles through the seaport”.

Idris Tanko, the CEO of Blue Star car stand, told our correspondent that Customs operatives visited his stand and were particular about vehicles model from 2009 and above.

“Once a car has crossed the border, you have no right to stop someone who bought his car three years ago and harass him. There are times a customer will call you to tell you that he is being harassed by Customs officers over vehicles he bought from us three years ago,” he said.

However, the Public Relations Officer for the Nigerian Customs in charge of Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa states, Inspector Abdul Usman, told our correspondent that the dealers have nothing to worry about, adding that the operation as carried out by the Federal Operations Unit and Strike Force were only visiting the car stands to get the necessary vehicle particulars.
